I submerge myself in the narrative of the place using photography to record my observations. I walk or cycle, scanning for situations that trigger a response and promote thinking.
I survey the area, wherever that is. It’s where I source materials to high-jack for use. I refer to the photos as field notes. They are often details, corners, the accidental placement of one thing against another, the incidental play of light and wind.
I am not interested in history. I deep-dive into whatever is there. Time is circular. It is folding and revealing, an origami game of chance and probability. New surfaces appear then fold away again.
Here, on this site, everything tells me about the length of day and in turn, about work and industry. Giant structures, roof lines, shadows and angles, dust and raw materials. Manipulation, extraction, re-use, and renovation; the new always following the old.
While taking photos requires me to be present and leads me to make sculptures that exist in real time and space, I am concerned with absence and impermanence.
That void, that in-between in turn, leads back to its twin, to being here if only for a short while.
