Crappy little things to hold in your hand V1, V2

Velvet, rubble

Dimensions variable

Reflecting on how loss of touch affects mental health, Crappy little things to hold in your hand act as a catalyst to evoke physical connection and to remind us that this connection offers comfort. We can imagine engaging with them, lifting them from their static position, weighing them in our hands, feeling their softness and imagining contexts for them. They are objects for action and communication. The forms, suggestive of familiar shapes, are made from re-purposed velvet that has been roughly sewn together with no attempt to hide the casual nature of their making. They are filled with lumpy rubble so the textures of their stuffing shows. The plywood box they sit on is also roughly made with its method of construction evident. Being set low, it requires the viewer to lean in to survey the objects, halfway between floor and table height to hover in awkward space. The objects appear important but its not clear why they are so casually made. Only through touching them can they be activated; stationary they are robbed of their function remaining objects between the known and unknown, toying with our understanding of care.
